JOB SUMMARY: The Head Custodian shall be responsible for the daily coordination of the custodial staff and general appearance of the facility assigned to his/her care, providing a safe, orderly and sanitary environment conducive to learning for all students and faculty.


Organize and direct the work force to establish optimum efficiency in cooperation with the Custodial Supervisor and Building Principal. Including but not limited to daily cleaning activities, coordination of set up and tear down for school events and outside groups and maintaining supply inventory.

Provide coordination, oversight and execution of the summer cleaning program including but not limited to planning and coordination of work with the summer staff and full-time employees.

Maintain inventory and provide purchasing requests to the Custodial Supervisor.

Organize and establish a schedule for weekend and holiday building checks.

Clean conference rooms, classrooms, auditoriums, lunchrooms, kitchens, gymnasiums, stairways and corridors according to the District’s cleaning standards, including but not limited to sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, dusting and trash removal.

Clean and disinfect restrooms and locker rooms daily, which includes sinks and toilets; refill paper towel and toilet paper dispenser.

Provide assistance with moving furnishings and supplies which are necessary to the function of the building.

Report all repairs which may affect safety and health to visitors, students and staff to the Director in a prompt manner.

Change burned out light bulbs/tubes in assigned area.

Perform monthly filter changes on HVAC equipment in the assigned area.

Read and understand corresponding materials safety datasheet and appropriately handle and dilute concentrated chemicals.

Perform other duties as assigned by the Custodial Supervisor or Director of Facilities.

QUALIFICATIONS: High School diploma or equivalent necessary

Experience in custodial work preferred (3 year minimum)

Submission of pre-employment medical examination (Section 148 of the Pennsylvania School Code)

Submission of a report of criminal history record from the Pennsylvania State Police (Section 111 of the Pennsylvania School Code)

FBI Criminal History Record

Submission of a clearance report from the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare in accordance with Act 151 of 1994

Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Ability to reach above and below the waist

Ability to use fingers to pick, feel and grasp objects

Ability to work off of ladders, scaffolding and high lift devices

Ability to lift and/or carry supplies and/or papers weighing no more than 50 lbs.

Ability to mostly walk and move about throughout the work environment

Ability to read and understand materials safety data sheet

Ability to handle and dilute concentrated chemicals
