CELEBRATE THE FOUNDATION OF AMERICA – DAR Promotes Constitution Week September 17-23
POTTSTOWN PA. - The Mahanatawny Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American
Revolution, in Pottstown since 1939, is hosting two events on Constitution Day, September 17, 2025, for
Constitution Week. The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution urges Americans to reflect on the United States Constitution during this month’s annual observance in honor of this foundational document of national governance.
The DAR initiated the observance in 1955, when the service organization petitioned the U.S. Congress to dedicate September 17–23 of each year to the commemoration of Constitution Week. Congress adopted the resolution, and on August 2, 1956, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed it into Public Law #915. The celebration’s goals are threefold: to encourage the study of the historical events that led to the framing of the Constitution in September 1787; to remind the public that the Constitution is the basis of America’s great heritage and the foundation for its way of life; and to emphasize U.S. citizens’ responsibility to protect, defend and preserve the U.S. Constitution.
Wednesday September 17, 2025, marks the 238th anniversary of the signing of the Constitution.
The First Event is:
The Pottstown Community is invited to attend the Honor and Remembrance Ceremony at the Memorial Wall at Zion’s United Church of Christ, 209 Chestnut St., Pottstown Pa. at 3:00 p.m. weather permitting. The Mahanatawny Chapter of DAR will Recognized four Revolutionary War Patriots buried on the grounds.
The Second Event is:
“Bells Across America” The Pottstown Community is invited to participate in the reenactment of September 17, 1787, when church bells rang through Philadelphia at 4:00 p.m. to celebrate the
delegates emerging from Independence Hall with the newly signed Constitution. The Mahanatawny DAR asks you to join Pottstown Churches, fire stations, and schools as they ring their bells or sound their sirens. Set your cell phone to ring a bell tone on September 17, 2025, at 4:00 p.m. for 1 minute.
