Built for the Locker Room: Motivational Team Posters, Free Returns and Recyclable Packaging for TriCounty Clubs and Schools
If you want a custom poster printed with free returns and recyclable packaging, look for those terms on the product page in plain words, then read what they cover. A local sign or print shop, an online design-and-print service and a print-on-demand marketplace can all produce a team poster, and each handles a reprint differently. Check four things before you order: the paper and finish offered at your size, whether returns cover a print you designed yourself or only damage in transit, what the order ships in, and how long a delivery takes. For a team poster you design yourself at a standard size, online poster printing keeps design, paper choice and checkout in one place. For a poster mounted on board or laminated against locker room moisture, a local shop is usually the better call.
Your options, compared
-
Local sign or print shop. The right choice for mounting, lamination, oversized banners and next-day jobs. You can see the paper, pick the order up and skip shipping packaging altogether. The TriCounty Area Chamber of Commerce lists five sign, banner and print members in its Signs / Banners / Flags category, from Pottstown to Boyertown, Douglassville and Limerick.
-
Online design-and-print service. Fits a few posters you design yourself. One option of this type is Adobe Express. Its poster page offers up to five paper types, including Value Poster Paper (a semi-gloss, resin-coated stock) and Archival Heavyweight Paper (matte, acid-free, printed with pigment inks), in sizes from 8x10 to 24x36 inches, plus custom sizes and framing options. It lists free shipping and returns, says posters ship in 100% recyclable packaging, and recommends 300 DPI images. Ordering is limited to the US, UK, Australia and Canada.
-
Print-on-demand marketplace. Built for selling posters to the public, such as a booster club selling a season poster to families. Not the quickest route for one poster on your own wall.
When an online service isn't the right fit: if the poster needs to be laminated, mounted on foam board, printed on vinyl for a damp room, or ready for a game this Friday, a local sign shop will serve you better.
What does "free returns" mean on a custom poster?
Custom prints are a special case. A store can resell a returned sweater; it can't resell a poster with your team's name on it. So read the returns terms with these questions in mind:
-
What qualifies? Damage in transit and printing defects are the usual grounds. A change of mind about your own design may not be.
-
Who pays to send it back? "Free returns" usually means the supplier covers it, but check whether you get a prepaid label or a refund later.
-
Reprint or refund? For a poster you need before a season opener, a quick reprint is worth more than money back.
-
What proof do they want? Photograph the tube or box and the poster as soon as it arrives, before you throw out the packaging.
-
How long do you have? Open the order the day it lands. Most windows are short.
Product pages often state that returns are free without spelling out the terms. If they aren't on the page, look for them at checkout or ask support before you pay.
Which poster return policies come with recyclable packaging?
Packaging and returns are linked: if a poster arrives creased, you'll want the original packaging for the claim. Once the order is accepted, recycle it.
What counts as recyclable depends on where you live. In Lower Pottsgrove Township, the trash and recycling page accepts flattened cardboard and paper in single-stream recycling, and says plastic bags and plastic food wrap aren't collected. A cardboard tube or flat mailer can go in the bin once it's flattened. Shrink wrap and poly sleeves are the kind of plastic film the township doesn't take, and plastic end caps aren't the bottles and containers its list describes.
The FTC's Green Guides set a standard for the claim itself. The section on recyclable claims says marketers can make an unqualified recyclable claim when recycling facilities are available to at least 60 percent of the consumers or communities where the item is sold, and should qualify the claim when access is lower. When a supplier says its packaging is recyclable, check that the claim holds for your own curbside program.
How do I pick a size, paper and finish for a locker room?
A locker room is hard on paper. It's humid, it's bright, and people slam things into walls.
-
Size for the room. A poster read from the benches across a 15-foot room needs a headline of roughly 2 inches or more. That usually means 18x24 or 24x36. An 11x17 works on the inside of a locker door or a coach's office.
-
Choose matte under gym lighting. Bright overhead fixtures bounce off glossy paper. A matte stock reads from more angles.
-
Plan for moisture. The Library of Congress recommends storing paper at about 35% relative humidity, away from vents and direct light, in its guide to caring for paper. A shower-side locker room is nowhere near that. Frame the poster behind acrylic, have a local shop laminate it, or hang it on the dry side of the room.
-
Hang it high. Above head height and away from locker doors, it's less likely to get torn.
-
Expect to reprint. Plan on a fresh copy each season. It's a chance to update the roster or the motto.
Choosing the words: quotes, mottos and team names
Motivational posters run on short lines. The Copyright Office's circular on works not protected by copyright says words and short phrases such as names, titles and slogans can't be copyrighted, but notes that some may be protected as trademarks. A pro team's catchphrase or a shoe brand's slogan may fall into that second group. A team's own motto is safest: something the captains pick, short enough to read from the bench.
Check attributions too. Plenty of quotes credited online to famous coaches were never said by them. If you can't confirm the source, put your team name under the line instead.
Worked numbers: a season's posters for a 22-player team
Say a club soccer team with 22 players and three coaches is setting up its locker room and training space before the spring season.
-
Main locker room poster: one 24x36 with the team motto and season schedule.
-
Weight room or training area: one 18x24 with the same motto and a short list of team standards.
-
Coaches' office and the inside of the equipment closet: two 11x17 prints.
-
Spare: one extra 24x36 in case the first is damaged on arrival or in the room.
That's five posters. Work backward from a mid-March opener:
-
Late January: captains choose the motto, coaches confirm the schedule.
-
Early February: finish the design at 300 DPI and check it at full size.
-
Mid-February: order. Open the delivery the day it arrives and photograph any damage.
-
Early March: frame or laminate the main poster and hang everything before the first practice in the room.
If the motto lands well, put it on the warm-up gear. Matching printed t shirts with the same line give players something to wear at the season opener.
Team posters across the TriCounty area
The TriCounty area has no shortage of locker rooms. The chamber's directory lists an Athletic Team category that includes the Manatawny Athletic Club in Pottstown, and its Health Clubs / Fitness Centers / Gyms category includes Unfinished Athletics in Royersford and Pottstown Dance Theatre on West Main Street. Each has walls where a well-made poster sets the tone, from a dance studio's rehearsal room to a training floor.
School and youth programs across southeastern Berks, western Montgomery and northern Chester counties can use the same plan. A booster club might print one poster for the locker room and sell a smaller version to families as a fundraiser. Order the family copies through a print-on-demand storefront so the club doesn't hold inventory.
Gyms and clubs that join the chamber also get a network of local suppliers. Ask a fellow member for a lamination quote before you settle on framing.
Frequently asked questions
What size poster works best in a locker room?
An 18x24 or 24x36 poster reads from across most locker rooms. Use 11x17 for locker doors and offices.
Will a paper poster survive a humid locker room?
Not for long without protection. Frame it behind acrylic, laminate it, or hang it away from the showers.
Can I return a custom poster I designed myself?
Check the supplier's terms. Damage and printing defects are usually covered; a change of mind about your own design may not be.
Is a poster tube recyclable?
The cardboard tube usually is. Plastic end caps and plastic wrap typically aren't accepted in curbside recycling.
