Family Services’ Meals on Wheels Program is holding a Pet Food Drive from December 9–19, 2024. All donated pet food will be shared with local Meals on Wheels recipients who need a little help providing food for their furry companions.
“Pets play an important role in the life of a homebound older adult, providing social connection and enhancing their physical and mental health and well-being,” said Phoebe Kancianic, Program Director, Meals on Wheels. “For many of our meal recipients, their pet is their closest companion and one of their only sources of consistent comfort.”
But caring for pets takes a physical and financial toll on older adults who live alone. Feeding, grooming, and caring for them can be challenging with limited money and mobility.
To help our local senior neighbors in need, Family Services’ Meals on Wheels program recently launched a Pet Program. The program provides pet food and cat litter to 25 Meals on Wheels recipients for 33 pets every month, all completely free of charge.
“Keeping pets and their seniors together is just one of the ways Meals on Wheels is helping our aging neighbors feel less alone,” said Kancianic.
During the Pet Food Drive on December 9–19, Family Services’ Meals on Wheels Program will collect:
- Canned cat and dog food
- Dry cat and dog food
These pet food donations can be dropped in marked collection boxes at the following Donation Drop Off Sites:
- Family Services’ Pottstown Office, 1976 East High Street, Pottstown
- PetSmart, 1112 Town Square Road, Pottstown
- Petco, 1844 East Ridge Pike, Royersford

“Meals on Wheels is so much more than just a meal,” said Kancianic. “Nutritious meals create an opportunity to build relationships and strengthen bonds with our senior neighbors. Regular meal delivery provides tailored nutrition, social connection, compassion and care, safety, and so much more. Thanks to the community’s ongoing support, we are able to serve area seniors who turn to our program in times of need.”
Family Services’ Meals on Wheels program began in 1971 with seven clients in Pottstown. Now, 53 years later, the program serves an average of 115 older adults in Pottstown, Royersford, and the Lower Perkiomen Valley each weekday with two nutritionally balanced meals, warm conversation, and a brief safety check.
